Drupal Wins Both Best PHP Open Source CMS And Overall 2008 Open Source CMS Award

Drupal won both the Best PHP Open Source CMS category and the Overall 2008 Open Source CMS Award from the Packt Open Source Content Management System Award!

Check the news here : www.packtpub.com/award

This is great news because my blog and lots of my websites are made with Drupal and I'm everyday happier not to have chosen Joomla when I was still evaluating both and hesitating.

Here you can read about Drupal being simply the best PHP Open Source CMS, with Joomla! and CMS Made Simple at the second place in a tie:

And you can read about Drupal being the best overall Open Source CMS here:

When I read on forums so many people praising Joomla instead of Drupal, I wonder what is happening with them, don't they realize that all SERIOUS awards are always won by Drupal over Jooma? Don't they see that a lot of SERIOUS big players in the web industry always chose Drupal to create or update their web properties and never Joomla? Are they all blind or plain stupid?

Last year Drupal won the Best Overall CMS Award but didn't win the best php CMS (was second behind joomla) why? Because of a stupid rule Packt had set up which said one CMS couldn't win several categories. This year they removed this stupid rule and so Drupal won both as it should have already last year!

Drupal founder Dries Buytaert said "these awards are a testament to the valuable contributions from dedicated Drupal community members around the globe. Working together, the Drupal community is building the future of the dynamic web so that anyone can quickly build great social publishing websites."

Anyway, congratulations to Drupal for being the best Open Source CMS in the world and enabling me and tons of others to create powerful websites on which we can rely so quickly and easily!

I didn't know that the French

I didn't know that the French Digg is made with Drupal: http://www.digg-france.com/

Yes, Drigg is a good

Yes, Drigg is a good Digg-like script that runs on Drupal 5 only. The Drupal 6 version is coming out real soon now and I'll make a blog spot when it will be released, because running on Drupal 6 means it will improve a problem that Drigg has: it is consumming a great amount of server resources even with cache enabled, so it really need the Drupal 6 cache's optimization.

I can't say I feel the same.

I can't say I feel the same. I have been working with both on an Ubuntu system, trying to find the best solution for my family, friend's and my own needs(community profile(myspace/facebook like)/Photo/Video/Forum/blogs/e-com/file services). I just find it so much easier to find readily available easy to configure and use modules/extensions for Joomla.

Where have I gone wrong?

I think that the issue here

I think that the issue here is simply that the learning curve is steppier with drupal than joomla and that's it. Not only with drupal but also as you said with essential modules, because one thing is for sure: drupal is not enough on its own, there are a handful of essential modules to use and for that you need to know which ones and what they do and why they're needed for a new site.

Also for "cosmetic" or less important modules such as bridges between Drupal and a well known service, you're right that it can be more difficult to find one by browsing the modules on drupal.org, you need to search the drupal forums or just ask. Maybe this module will not have already been created or it will be hidden somewhere, but if the service is really well known then you can be quite sure that the module exists somewhere and that you can find it by asking the forums and/or making a google search of your own like "servicename drupal module".

I admit that this issue can make you prefer another CMS than Drupal, but I can assure you that it's a mistake, because Drupal can do whatever you want, it just needs a little more time and dedication at first than others.

One story, not so long ago, drupal even didn't have an easy install system when most other open source scripts already have one easy install system. You still needed to import the database in mysql by hand, via phpmyadmin or whichever solution. So you can imagine that this step alone was putting off a lot of potential users, but for those who went through the trouble of installing drupal in the first place, then they were able to pursue their discovery of this wonderful CMS and I don't think you can find someone who regrets spending time with Drupal and then decided to change for another PHP CMS!

well congratulations for the

well congratulations for the Drupal team, who set up a wonderful cms system.

Please write something in the box below, a comment, a question, anything at all. You can even post links I don't mind at all. But please post something. If you leave this page without writing anything all your beloved ones will die instantly. Come on, don't be a rat, write something. I'll even give you money, and lot of it! You can do it, if you don't do it for me, do it for someone else, anybody, I don't care, could be for Obama or for the pope, but do it NOW before it's too late! Please, pretty please?
